What happens when you stop trusting the software’s default settings and start designing your live chat for performance?
We wanted to find out. So we ran a test.
Same traffic. Same pages. Same offer.
Just a different approach to live chat.
The results? Immediate.
Website leads increased 9× within days.
Why We Ran This Test
In our last article, we shared what we found after reviewing 5,006 B2B websites. The overwhelming pattern? Most live chat setups don’t work.
They’re passive. They rely on bots that frustrate users. They ask for contact details before offering help. And more often than not, there’s no one there when a high-intent visitor wants to talk.
That’s a problem. Especially when B2B traffic is expensive, and every click counts.
So we decided to run a head-to-head test – to see what would happen if we replaced automation with actual humans, and took a proactive approach instead of a passive one.
The Setup
We selected a group of clients across six industries:
- B2B SaaS
- Education
- Cloud Services
- Financial Services
- Industrial Products
- Franchises
Each client had solid traffic volumes and clear call-to-action goals- usually to book a demo, start a trial, or request a quote.
Then, we tested two live chat approaches side by side:
1. The “Default” Setup (Baseline)
This reflected what most software providers recommend:
- A passive chat icon in the corner
- A delayed chatbot greeting with generic language
- Asking for an email upfront (before offering any help)
- No human agents are available if the bot can’t handle it
2. The “Optimised” Setup (Test Group)
This was our tested strategy:
- Proactive chat triggers based on page and behavior
- Real humans responding within 30 seconds
- Conversational, value-led scripts that mirrored how good SDRs speak
- Smart branching based on visitor answers
- CRM and calendar integration for instant handoff
The only variable that changed was the chat setup. Everything else – site, copy, traffic, offers – stayed the same.
The Results
Here’s what happened when we made the switch:
| Metric | Default Chatbot | Optimised Human Chat |
| Leads Captured | Baseline | 9× Increase |
| Avg.. Response Time | Instant (bot) | < 30 sec (human) |
| Email Capture Rate | 28% | 54% |
| Chat Satisfaction (if rated) | 2.1/5 | 4.6/5 |
Across every client, the results were consistent.
Visitors were more likely to engage, more likely to share their details, and more likely to convert into booked meetings or qualified leads.
The change wasn’t subtle. It was immediate and dramatic.
Real Examples from the Test
- On a B2B SaaS site, proactive human chat triggered a 5× increase in demo bookings from the pricing page within 10 days.
- A financial services client saw email capture rise from 18% to 61% simply by removing the “email-first” bot gate.
- An industrial products company booked 12 net-new meetings in one week through live chat alone – previously, they had averaged 1-2.
The biggest takeaway: buyers don’t want to be interrogated by a form. They want help. Fast. And they want to feel like someone’s actually listening.
Why This Worked
1. Speed + Human Touch
High-intent visitors don’t wait. And bots- even fast ones – feel impersonal. Humans add trust, nuance, and confidence.
2. Contextual Triggers
We didn’t just trigger chat on the homepage. We targeted pricing, demo, and product pages – places where decision-making happens.
3. Real Conversation
Our reps engaged like great SDRs: asking questions, tailoring the message, and knowing when to hand off.
4. Smart Follow-Up
Every qualified lead was passed straight to the client’s CRM or booked on their calendar. No manual work. No delay.
What Most Teams Get Wrong
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: most companies think they “have live chat” – but they don’t. They have a widget. With a bot. That no one checks.
And when that’s your frontline experience, you’re sending a message you don’t mean to:
“We don’t really want to talk to you.”
That’s not what good sales feels like. And it’s definitely not conversion rate optimization.
The Takeaway
If your live chat is bot-only, passive, or asking for info before offering help, it’s likely doing more harm than good.
The solution isn’t more software. It’s a better strategy.
A human-first, proactive, fast-response chat experience consistently outperforms default automation, even when traffic and offers stay the same.
We’ve seen it across industries. We’ve measured the lift. And we’ve built the systems to scale it.
